 2017 Preview

Houston County completed the 2016 season with a 6-5 record. With their 4-3 region record and a fourth place finish in Class 1A region two, the Lions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Houston County's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Linden by a score of 77-7.

The Lions improved in 2016 with their first winning season since 2009. The Lions won as many games as in any season since 2009. It marked the first time since the 2009 season that the Lions qualified for the playoffs. The Lions last playoff victory came during the 2004 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win. The Lions hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Atkins saw improvement as they won six games following a 0-10 record in 2015.

Since 2010, the Houston County football program has struggled with a record of 12-59.

Over the past 25 seasons, Houston County has managed to compile a record of 129-149. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 30th in Class 1A and 232nd in the AHSAA.

The Lions are led by head coach Michael Atkins who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 6-15 over the past two seasons at Houston County. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Atkins.

Coach Atkins' overall record as a head football coach in two season stands at 6-15 (28.6%).

After winning just two games in four years, Coach Atkins has Houston County headed in the right direction following a 6-5 record last year.

The Houston County Lions will play in Class 1A region two during the 2017 season.

The Lions will be in the mix for one of the last two playoff spots in region two this season.

The Lions open the 2017 season on the road against non-region opponent Cottonwood on Friday, August 25 at Hicks Stadium. Last year the Cottonwood Bears finished with an overall record of 2-8 and in sixth place in Class 2A region two. The Bears closed out the regular season with a loss to Daleville by a score of 48-21.

Houston County and Cottonwood have met a total of 84 times on the football field. The Lions have a 29-51-4 record against the Bears. They last met in 2016 with Houston County winning by a score of 35-14.
